Making Photo Montages with Mike Stratil
Saturday, May 17, 9:30 to 11:30 AM
Sandhills Community College Horticultural Center
Mike Stratil has developed a step-by-step method for producing photomontages with strong artistic impact. It is based on a number of ideas from the psychology of creativity, which is an area that Mike has studied and taught.
Briefly, the method begins by asking oneself what general message about life one would like to communicate to others through photography. It then uses free association to stimulate one's imagination in finding images relevant to this message. Finally, it uses a combination of additional free association and formal logical analysis to integrate one's images into a cohesive artistic theme. In the workshop the audience will be invited to work through these steps in a practice run during the presentation and to discuss their experiences. It is suggested that attendees may find it helpful to bring a pad of paper to use for sketching and writing down their ideas. This workshop will be somewhat psychological, but not overly technical. It will be mostly experiential--with an emphasis on self-exploration and discovery.
